extracurricular courses

Last year, I completed the Startup, Law and Business course at FDV (Faculdade de Direito de Vitória). This intensive program blended entrepreneurial strategy with legal practice, guiding us from ideation to market launch. Over the span of several months, we explored:

  • Business Model Development: Crafting a viable value proposition and revenue streams using tools like the Business Model Canvas.
  • Corporate and Contract Law: Understanding company formation, governance structures, and drafting key legal documents (e.g., shareholder agreements, NDAs).
  • Intellectual Property: Learning how to protect innovations through trademarks, patents and copyrights.
  • Funding Strategies: Evaluating venture capital, angel investing and alternative financing methods.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Navigating Brazil’s legal framework for startups, including tax obligations and consumer protection rules.

Through case studies, hands-on workshops and a final capstone project—where my team developed and pitched a mock startup to a panel of investors and legal experts—I acquired practical skills in legal drafting, business planning and investor pitching. This course equipped me to launch and manage ventures with both entrepreneurial vision and legal certainty.

Last year, I also completed the Port and Maritime Law course at FDV (Faculdade de Direito de Vitória). This specialized program dove into the legal framework governing ports, shipping and maritime activities, covering:

  • International Conventions: Studying key treaties such as the Hague-Visby Rules, Hamburg Rules and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
  • Carriage of Goods by Sea: Examining bills of lading, charter parties (time, voyage and bareboat), and carrier liabilities.
  • Maritime Contracts & Liens: Drafting and interpreting contracts for shipbuilding, ship sale and purchase, demurrage clauses, and understanding maritime liens and mortgages.
  • Port Regulation & Operations: Learning about port concessions, terminal agreements, customs procedures and health & safety requirements in port areas.
  • Maritime Insurance & Risk Management: Analyzing hull and machinery insurance, protection & indemnity (P&I) clubs, and insurance claims processes.
  • Liability & Dispute Resolution: Covering salvage, general average, wreck removal and arbitration forums like the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA).
  • Environmental & Safety Law: Addressing MARPOL obligations, ballast water management, oil pollution compensation (CLC Convention) and port state control.

Through interactive lectures, real-world case studies and site visits to Vitória’s port facilities, I gained hands-on experience in drafting charter parties, resolving shipping disputes and ensuring regulatory compliance. The course culminated in a moot arbitration exercise before a panel of maritime law practitioners, sharpening both my technical knowledge and advocacy skills.
