Luciana De Oliveira Furtado

Active member of the mammals research team under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Ana Paula Carmignotto, participating in multiple field expeditions and research initiatives focused on small mammal diversity, ecology, and conservation. Projects span both the Cerrado and northeastern Atlantic Forest biomes, including the Pernambuco Endemism Center (CEP).
Main activities and contributions include:

• Systematic surveys of mammalian fauna using live traps, pitfall traps, camera traps, mist nets, and acoustic bat detectors
• Fieldwork in Cerrado southeastern remnants and fragmented landscapes of the northeastern Atlantic Forest
• Research on mammalian diversity, habitat use, and impacts of land use, prescribed fire, and woody encroachment in the Cerrado
• Assessment of the effects of habitat fragmentation on mammal communities in the CEP region
• Species identification, individual marking, specimen collection, and preparation for scientific collections (wet preservation and taxidermy)
• Experience with protocols for biosafety, sample handling, and data collection for eco-epidemiological research involving potential zoonotic pathogens
• Experience with cytogenetic techniques (karyotyping) and tissue sampling for cryopreservation and fibroblast culture in cryobanks

Completed an internship in the Environmental Microbiology Teaching Laboratory, with a focus on quality control analyses of cleaning products. Developed technical skills in microbiological procedures and laboratory routines.
Main activities included:

• Preparation of microbial cultures using streak plate techniques
• Incubation and monitoring of microbial growth
• Microscopic analysis for identification and quantification of microorganisms
• Sterilization and handling of laboratory materials and equipment in accordance with biosafety protocols

Served as a volunteer trainee at Instituto Argonauta's Marine and Coastal Animal Triage and Rehabilitation Center, contributing to the care, management, and veterinary support of rescued marine fauna.
Main responsibilities included:

• Daily maintenance, feeding, and handling of animals undergoing rehabilitation
• Monitoring animal health, behavior, and recovery progress
• Assisting in veterinary care and clinical procedures for incoming and treated animals
• Preparing and maintaining enclosures, medical supplies, and handling equipment in compliance with hygiene and welfare standards

Completed an internship focused on the conservation and ex situ management of marine species at the Aquário de Ubatuba. Activities included both practical tasks and scientific research.
Main responsibilities and contributions:

• Daily maintenance, feeding, and monitoring of marine species in exhibition and quarantine tanks
• Support in environmental education initiatives aimed at public awareness of marine conservation
• Development of an independent research project entitled "Juvenile development of Echinaster brasiliensis in captivity under different feeding treatments"

Scientific Initiation Project in the fields of Taxonomy and Zoology, funding by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
Project title: "Species description of the subfamily Porricondylinae in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil."
Main activities included:

• Taxonomic analysis and morphological description of Diptera specimens
• Use of microscopy and preparation of specimens for scientific collections
• Literature review, data organization, and preparation of scientific illustrations and descriptions
• Contribution to expanding the taxonomic knowledge of Neotropical Porricondylinae

Completed a multidisciplinary internship covering various sectors of wildlife management and education at the Zoológico Municipal Quinzinho de Barros.
Main activities and experiences included:

• Accompaniment and training in the Veterinary, Mammal, Reptile, Bird, Environmental Education, and Nutrition sectors
• Assistance in updating the studbook of Brachyteles arachnoides (Southern muriqui)
• Participation in environmental enrichment planning and implementation for captive species
• Oral presentation and critical discussion of a bibliographic review on Yellow Fever
• Practical training in the handling and physical restraint of psittacines (parrots), marmosets, and Brazilian porcupine
